Today, consumers are looking for foods and beverages that not only taste great but help them make healthier choices. Our portfolio of ingredients includes many products that are helping to broaden the range of foods our customers offer. These include not just SPLENDA® Sucralose, a no-calorie sweetener, but, for example, a range of fat-replacing ingredients that help our customers provide new reduced-fat options. By using our ingredients, food producers can offer consumers a wider range of food and beverages than ever before.
Tate & Lyle is committed to working with our partners across the food chain to ensure that people have the knowledge, information and range of foods they need to make choices that maintain a healthy lifestyle. We are participating in a range of initiatives to address these issues at an employee, community and industry level, some of which are listed below. It is also worth noting that our ingredients can be used in non-food applications which positively contribute to our wellbeing. For example, we produce sorbitol which is used in toothpaste and our ingredients (such as polyols and speciality syrups) are used in pharmaceuticals. In addition, our industrial ingredients also contribute to our living environment by replacing chemicals often made from oil with renewable alternatives, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reducing usage of petrochemicals.
Community Food Enterprise
Areas of East London have the highest rate of heart disease in Britain and many residents live several miles from shops stocking reasonably priced fresh food. Community Food Enterprise (CFE) runs a mobile shop providing fresh fruit and vegetables at cost price. We've teamed up with CFE to meet growing demand by: donating them office and warehouse space, funding a new van, and offering business mentoring. CFE is about offering people choice in their diets - this is something that Tate & Lyle actively supports.
Moreover we see Community Food Enterprise not just in terms of nutrition but in terms of helping children fulfill their full potential, currently thousands of children in Newham go to school without any breakfast. Over the last year through our support we have helped CFE serve 40,000 meals at breakfast clubs and helped distribute 220,000 pieces of fruit to schools and nurseries.

UK Food & Drink Federation foodfitness Programme
As members of the UK Food & Drink Federation (FDF), we support the foodfitness programme which helps people understand how to balance intake with activity. Foodfitness provides practical advice on healthy eating and active lifestyle and is based on positive, science-based messages including 'aim for 5 fruit and veg a day'. In 2003, foodfitness launched the Join the Activaters education programme to all 25,000 UK Primary schools to promote healthy lifestyle to 7-9 year olds.
